Problem-Oriented Policing training

An excellent training opportunity on Problem Oriented Policing and Situational Crime Prevention is being sponsored by the Wisconsin Crime Prevention Practitioners Association, The Center for Problem Oriented Policing, Town of Menasha and Grand Chute Police Departments and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

The featured speaker will be Michael Scott, the Director of the Center for Problem Oriented Policing and an Associate Profession of the University of Madison Law School.

Chief Wilkinson of Neenah PD had the following to say,

I want to make a pitch for this training.  A few years ago, I had the opportunity to attend the Problem Oriented Leadership Institute for Chief Executives, in which Mike Scott and Herman Goldstein were the primary trainers.  It was revolutionary training.  It completely altered the way I approach community problems.  That was a two-week course, but this condensed class will still give tremendously valuable information and whet your appetite for more.  I urge you to attend this training if you can.

The program will be held on Wednesday June 23rd from 9am to 3pm at the Grand Chute Police Department located at 1900 Grand Chute Blvd.  The cost is $20 per person which will include:  Lunch, snacks, other refreshments and all handout materials.

Refer to the attached flyer for additional information and registration materials.

Organized retail crime on the rise

Courtesy: Huffingtonpost.com

Organized retail crime is on the rise according to the “Current Crime Trends” survey by the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), WWD reports. The FBI estimates that $30 billion worth of merchandise is stolen each year. L.A. has seen the highest rise, followed by Houston, Miami and Baltimore.

Sixty-five percent of a broad array of retailers — mass merchants, specialty stores, electronics and appliance stores, groceries, and fabric and craft shops — surveyed in January reported an increase in organized retail crime, while 74 percent said they experienced an increase in stolen items being sold on online marketplaces. Forty-seven percent said there was an increase in hot goods being sold both in traditional fencing operations and flea markets, and another 16 percent said there were more stolen goods being sold in pawn shops. In addition, 78 percent said there was an increase in amateur shoplifting.

RILA Senior Vice President for Government Affairs John Emling explained that retail robberies are coordinated crimes with more serious implications:

“A lot of times, crime rings are using the profits to fund drug operations or much more criminal activity. In cases with [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement], we have seen South American and Central American gangs receiving profits from organized crime rings here in this country.”

RILA will now use the new findings to work with Congress on creating legislation to curb retail crime.

Be sure to attend the conference in September as one of our featured speakers will be from the Target Corporate offices speaking on this problem!
